January15, 2013—The Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (TMLP) has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. of Lowell, Mass., for the supply of solar power from a photovoltaic (PV) facility constructed at 32 Padelford Street, Berkley, Mass. The system is approximately three megawatts (MW) DC in size, covering 15 acres of land. Having been energized and placed in service in December, the solar farm is the largest solar project in TMLP service territory.

"This solar resource is a valuable addition to our power supply portfolio," stated Scott Whittemore, manager of energy supply and planning for TMLP. "It will lock in long-term power that is competitive with current low market prices, adding valuable diversity to our power supply."

This project provides enough peak power to supply1,000 average-sized residential customers for 20 years to avoid approximately 1,800 tons of global warming carbon dioxide emissions annually, and will also improve air quality by reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 944 lb/yr and NOx emissions by 708 lb/yr. Under the PPA, Borrego Solar will finance, design and install the system at no upfront cost to TMLP. Borrego Solar will sell energy back to TMLP at an economical and fixed rate, allowing TMLP to offer clean energy to its customers at an economical rate.

"We continue to see demand for our PPA because it acts as a one-stop-shop for organizations to go solar," said Mike Hall, CEO of Borrego Solar. "We’re seeing more demand from utilities as they seek to diversify their energy portfolio and meet increasing renewable energy mandates in the most cost-effective way possible. We look forward to working with TMLP to help them achieve their solar energy goals."

TMLP customers can expect an additional benefit: reduction in TMLP load and resulting savings for generation, distribution and transmission costs. The PPA was approved by the TMLP commission on April 2, 2012, and construction began during the summer. Any upgrades to the TMLP distribution system needed to be made to accommodate the additional capacity will be paid for by Borrego Solar. TMLP General Manager Michael Horrigan "This PPA between TMLP and Borrego Solar shows the commitment of TMLP to enhance our power supply portfolio with green energy, while providing value to our customers," said Horrigan.
