Maxwell Technologies has achieved a record for the mass production efficiency of a heterojunction solar cell of 25.05%, certified by ISFH.

The HJT cell, with a total area of 274.3cm2 (M6 size), was produced with high-efficiency equipment and technology developed independently by Maxwell. The 25.05% conversion efficiency certification not only reflects the advanced level of research and development of the company's laboratory, but also means that, driven by its mass production technology, the achievable yield efficiency of HJT cells has now passed the 25% landmark, which is a milestone for promoting their commercial application.

The HJT Solar Cell and Vacuum Equipment R&D teams of Maxwell Technologies are made up of over 200 professional technicians. They focus on the R&D, design and manufacturing of high-capacity and low-cost PECVD, PVD, screen printing and LED light soaking equipment dedicated to HJT solar cell production, as well as the development of advanced manufacturing technology for HJT high-efficiency cells and modules.

The company's HJT PECVD and supporting equipment project was launched in January 2019 and since then Maxwell has developed a first generation of production capacity of 200MW and a second generation of 400MW of PECVD equipment. Through further independent research and development, the company has also become Chinese HJT cell production line equipment manufacturer to provide overall HJT manufacturing solutions to the solar industry.

As the industry's "rising star", the theoretical conversion efficiency of HJT technology is 27.5%, and with advantages including low degradation rate, excellent temperature coefficient, high bifaciality and good low-light response, the power generation gain in a heterojunction module's life cycle will be significant.

There are additionally only four processes involved in the manufacturing of a heterojunction cell (texturing, silicon-based film deposition (PECVD), transparent conductive film deposition (PVD) and screen printing) and, as a platform-based technology, HJT has the potential to overlay other advanced processes to increase conversion efficiency. It is a technology that offers the potential to make the combination of low-cost and high efficiency a reality in the solar industry.
