Conergy has handed over a 544 kilowatt in-roof system to the investor, Alubel, in Italy. The roof-integrated solar power plant has been installed at the premises of Alubel in Bagnalo in Piano, Reggio Emilia. The solar specialists have installed around 2,300 Conergy PowerPlus modules on more than 9,000 square metres of the factory's metal roof. The modules generate around 572,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. This is enough to supply more than 160 households with clean energy and more than the total electricity consumed by Alubel at its company premises. 33 Conergy IPG T converters feed the electricity into the Italian grid. The system is monitored using the Conergy VisionBox.

Giuseppe Sofia says: "Solar plants save electricity costs while being sustainable."

"Once again Conergy demonstrates its experience and expertise when it comes to roof installations", says Giuseppe Sofia, Managing Director of Conergy in Italy. "Roof installations continue to have potential, also under the new Conto Energia V. Over the last few years, many companies have changed their approach and launched a range of green initiatives. A solar power plant gives our customers two major advantages. It provides them with the perfect solution to the country's soaring electricity prices and at the same time helps them to achieve their environmental goals."

The new Conto Energia V: registration for installations above 12 kilowatts

The Conergy solar power plant still benefits from the subsidies offered under the Conto Energia IV. Once Italy had come close to hitting its energy targets and maximum subsidy amounts under the Conto Energia IV, the new Conto Energia V came into force at the end of August, bringing with it substantial cuts in solar subsidies. Now all planned power plants over 12 kilowatts have to be registered centrally in order to receive the feed-in tariffs once the installation is completed. However, plants that generate less than 12 kilowatts as well as installations that are integrated into buildings or that are built on the roofs of public buildings are exempt from registration. This also applies to systems between 12 and 50 kilowatts that are installed when replacing asbestos roofs.

Sofia: "Grid parity for rooftops achieved – now we have to get this across to people."

"With a level of own consumption of more than 70%, Italy has already achieved grid parity in both the private and commercial sector because of its excellent climatic conditions and high electricity prices", continues Sofia. "Now we need to get this across to consumers. This will take some time, but we're optimistic that we'll be able to continue operating successfully in Italy even without subsidies. Especially the commercial roofs are very interesting since industries consume most of their energy during the day. For private homes, storage solutions will be a key factor for this development in order to increase own consumption levels and thereby competitiveness."

Solar electricity 10-20% cheaper than electricity from the grid

Furthermore, there is the possibility of “net metering” in Italy, which offsets self consumed energy and electricity fed into the grid with the electricity consumed from the public grid, for instance at night. Moreover, high insolation values of 1,100 to 1,800 kilowatt hours per square metre and year have helped to the competitiveness of solar power in Italy, along with comparatively high electricity prices. Households that consume around 3,500 kilowatt hours a year pay about 20.3 euro cents per kilowatt hour, and if they consume 7,500 kilowatt hours a year they can pay as much as 24.9 euro cents. Industrial customers pay on average around 19 euro cents per kilowatt hour of electricity, but if they generate their own clean energy on their roofs they can save a substantial amount of money, with a kilowatt hour costing only 12 to 16 euro cents, depending on the region, irradiation, size and system cost of the installation as well as interest rates. Italy has thus achieved grid parity with both small rooftop installations on private houses and industrial power plants whenever there is an own consumption rate of 70% and above.
